Smellie scissors were for destroying the fetus. Dan R. Daniel Braun, MD FACOG Clinical Professor Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Indiana U. You describe it just how I would have done it had I the need to do it. I did have one delivery that could have used this back in '87. Baby died before I got it delivered. It remains the worst experience of my career. All maneuvers completed appropriately, to no avail. The symphysiotomy make SO much more sense than the Zavanelli maneuver. I am not sure I was aware of it in '87. Wasn't ther a tool in the past called the "Smelly Scissors" meant just for this? Or were they for something else? Joanne Bulley, MD

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
