>What is the policy covering antibiotic administration to GBS positive >elective repeat cesarean sections? > > John Gibbons Its not addressed by the guidelines. I've seen one "expert panel" discussion in Contemporary Ob/Gyn, Oct 1998, where it was discussed. Dr. Mead brought up the idea of admitting GBS positive patients at least 4 hours prior to their scheduled C/S and giving them PCN prophylaxis. I've personally felt that even culturing scheduled RCS patients for GBS was a waste of time and resources. The problem is that the pediatricians want that information and if I don't have it, they treat the infant as GBS unknown and do the serial CBCs, etc. and require 48 hours observation. It is hard for me to buy the argument without data, that a non-laboring scheduled C/S runs a risk approaching that of a laboring patient who delivers vaginally. So far I've refused to do the cultures.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
