Just because you haven't had a case of anaphylactic reaction to penicillin doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You can continue to give penicillin unnecessarily...I'm sure that there are other medications you and probably all of us give without a proper indication. The argument here is whether or not it is recommended to give antibiotics to a patient who in a previous pregnancy was GBS+ but in the current one is GBS-. The guidelines suggest no need to treat these patients unless they have had an affected neonate. Perhaps you should treat every patient with penicillin since if they are GBS- it could be a false negative test (that is more frequent than penicillin anaphylaxis). The issue of neonatal infections due to penicillin administration antenatally is no laughing matter. There are several studies documenting this problem.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
