Any relationship between Raloxifene and Ovarian Cancer?

My patient, a 57 year old white female, has 2 first degree relatives with breast cancer (mother and sister). Her mother also developed ovarian cancer from which she subsequently died. My patient believes that the ovarian cancer was the same "tissue type" as the breast cancer. However, she never understood whether the ovarian cancer was actually breast cancer which was metastatic to the ovary. The pathologist was asked this question specifically, but could not give a definitive answer.

The patient does not want to take any estrogen. She doesn't want to take Tamoxifen because of the increased risks of endometrial cancer.

She feels that raloxifene is a better drug for her but she had read (in the paper that accompanies the drug) that there may be an association between raloxifene and ovarian cancer. If this were in fact true, she would consider a laparoscopic oophorectomy prior to taking raloxifene.

Anyone have any comments or thoughts?

Thanking you in advance for your help.....

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
