The Unisom 25 mg and B-6 25 mg combo is suggested as an effective treatment for nausea & vomiting in pregnancy (p 28). Because of the bogus birth defect claims, this drug has probably been studied more closely than most other Cat A & B medications. I'm more confident about its safety than phenergan suppositories. Neibyl reports that while there are no known teratogenic effects of other antiemetics, much less information is availble. Other researchers claim that millions of dollars could be saved in hospital costs if it were brought back on to the market. A patient in my practice is using Bendectin (ordered through a compound pharmacy) for the first time in her third pregnancy. The first two pregnancies had her hospitalized multiple times. She's 24 weeks now and is actually gaining weight--has not required IV hydration at all.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
