When in nursing school do as many clinical rotations in OB, postpartum, nursery to help you better orient to these areas. Many L&D units are becoming LDRP's (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) depts. Also good to spend some time in general nursing to develop your skills before moving into a high risk area. Highest liability area in the hospital (L&D). Find a good mentor and look for opportunities to move into an open position. If you still like the specialty after some experience on your own as a L&D nurse, then consider nurse practitioner. Not everyone is cut out for OB there are certain stressors & benefits in this field. Get a feel for it, then decide. Good luck! Cindy

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
