My name is Rachel Goedken. I am presently a nursing student at the University of North Dakota. I recently worked with a pregnant patient who had an early second trimester loss due to her incompetent cervix. Since this experience I have become intereseted in methods used to maintain a pregnancy to term when dealing with with a diagnosis of an incompetent cervix. The use of cervical cerclage inparticular, interests me the most. In my search for information I have found conflicting studies pertaining to the effectiveness of this procedure. In one such study a randomized trial of cervical cerclage found no evidence that it either prolonged gestation or improved perinatal survival.(Rush&McPerson) While another study shows successful pregnancy outcomes before cerclage as 13% and after cerclage to be 59% for those mothers who had previous perinatal loses due to an incompetent cervix.(Al-Takroni) I would like to know how often cervical cerclage is seen in practice by OB nurses and would greatly appreciate any feedback about this proceedure's effectiveness. Thankyou for your time.
