Hi I am an RN, have been for many years, with background in nursery, and postpartum. I now work L&D and have for several years. The general job description on our unit, is providing labor support, being knowledgeable with the monitors, able to interpret the strips, we also circulate and scrub for our c-sections, and have to have experience with infants. All of our nurses have NRP, and ACLS and have all attended at least a basic fetal monitoring class, after a year or so they then go to an advanced fetal monitoring class. We also are certified to put in FSE' s. We generally each have "caught " at least 1-2 infants a year. As a general rule, most nurses have had at least a year or so experience in a med surg, or post partem unit. I don't remember us having hired any nurses straight out of nursing school. I love L&D as do most nurses that end up there. Good luck. I can get more specifics if you would like. Sheila
