Sorry, I work for a federal facility and our numbers have dropped as the Army guys are deployed. We usually have @60 deliveries a month. We do sometimes have to float to other units if we have no patients. It is usually the postpartum side, ER, or ambulatory surgery. Our manager keeps track of where we go and how long we stay, for reimbursement reasons. I understand the frustration, because generally when L&D is hopping we have no one to call and get help from. I have heard of facilities that will have nurses clock out and go home, which is not good either, so I guess I would float without a problem given that choice. As long as I was not primary nurse and felt that I had been adequately cross trained to the unit. I would refuse if I felt that it was a unit or an assignment outside of my expertise. Hope this helps, I think what you are experiencing is experienced in many place. Sheila

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
