Closed Nursing Units

Hi. I'm the nurse manager for a Women's and Children's Center. We have 5 LDR's, 16 postpartum beds, 13 level 2 intermediate care nursery cribs, and 9 pediatric beds. Over the past 6 months we have seen a great increase in our nurse being pulled to help cover other areas in the hospital, such as Med/Surg. As you can imagine staff are very frustrated and unhappy with their jobs. We are looking at the potential of becoming a closed unit, not pulling staff in or out of our unit. Basically the nurses would not be pulled to other areas but also could not request help from other areas. Does anyone out there have a unit of this nature? Can anyone give me further information; pros/cons?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
