Hello, my name is Callie Baker. I am a junior nursing student at the University of North Dakota. I have currently developed an interest in postmenopausal women and conflicting recommendations for pap smears. I have reviewed several journal articles stating pap smears are unecessary every year after menopause.According to Hwang (1999), if you are not at risk for cervical changes and you have three normal tests in a row you may be able to have the test less often.
In another article a pap test is generally advisable every 1 to 3 years, according to Aschgoodkin (2001).
According to Boyd (2001), doing pap smears every two years after menopause would cut down on unnecessary testing.
My question to you is in your facility what are your policies in conducting pap smears after menopause?
Thank You, Callie Baker, College of Nursing Student, University of North Dakota
