I recently completed my orientation to high risk L&D. I came with absolutely no L&D or pediatric experience except for my own experience having my children and only about 7 mos of city emergency experience and 1 1/2 yrs rural nursing. I got about 1wk in the classroom and buddied up with a senior nurse for about 5 wks. It has worked out fine because they all work as a team. If I am having difficulty I put on my call light and I get assistance immediately. It is a very supportive environment and at a time when there is a drastic nursing shortage they must do everything possible to keep their staff happy. I must say I am fine with being on my own already except for when baby is crowning and the doc isn't quite there yet....I am not ready to deliver a baby yet!

As far as rural L&D a girlfriend of mine had about 4 wks orientation and unfortunately only had 2-3 deliveries during that time and then was left on her own. I couldn't imagine.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
