When to test?

Hi, I've had some irregular periods in the past for various reasons (eating disorder, irregular birth control taking, etc). I am currently on the pill but would like to know whether or not I have an ovulation problem. How long would I have to go off the pill for to be able to take one of those at home ovulation tests? The one time I went off the pill since I started taking it a few years ago, I went off for six months and my period never became regular (extra long cycles like five to six weeks). How accurate are these tests? Thanks.
