Re: Birth Control for Young Couple Response from Dr. McIntoshFrom: KTP (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 28 May 2002 15:23:03 -0500 (CDT)
At Tue, 28 May 2002, William McIntosh, MD wrote: It may sound like a strange side effect, but I've found that each BCP I've tried (and Depo as well) as really affected my thinking and concentration. I feel as though I'm in a bit of a fog whenever I'm on the hormones and as soon as I've gotten off of them, I can think much more clearly. In addition, it increases my appetite significantly. Although I do my best to control it, I have put on about 10 pounds due to constantly being hungry (ok ok I admit it's due to me EATING when constantly hungry, not the hunger itself :) ). I feel better on pills that are more estrogenic (demulen was tollerable) however, I have noticed a pattern with ASCUS paps (most recently diagnosed as LGSIL). When I've been on pills that weighed more heavily on the progesterone side, the ASCUS paps go away. As soon as I am back on Demulen, they reappear within a few months. It could be a total coincidence. In addition, Kaiser refuses to give me Mircette or Demulen (the only two pills I've liked out of the many I've tried). They claim there's no medical reason for it and my GYN is obnoxious and won't fight for it. Since I'm not DYING and it's only unpleasant, it's not a good enough reason for them to switch me. I have a diaphragm but I need to get my GYN to check the fit. I don't have a problem with USING the diaphragm. I am only concerned what the failure rate is WHEN using it with EVERY act of intercourse. I may put up with the fog for anohter 6 months or so, until my SO gets within a year of finishing his Ph.D. A pregnancy at that point would be not be ideal, but would be acceptable.
