Trip to the OB-GYN

I posted this in the main forum but I didn't really get a straight answer, probably because it is so busy there. I am 19 years old and I finally made an appointment with the OB-GYN after nearly a year of irregular periods (2-8 week cycles) and cramps that confine me to bed and leave me nauseuos. I have never been before so I am very nervous. Is there anything I should ask or be sure to mention? I don't want to get out of there feeling like I haven't solved my problem. Also, when I made me appointment, they asked what it was for and I told them a regular check up. Was this correct or should I have been more specific about my problem?
