Group B strep is a normal bacteria that lives in the vaginas of a large number of women. It can cause a problem if at term pregnancy, it is there. Then as the baby comes throught eh birth canal, the GBS can get on the baby. In about 1 in 400 cases where this happens the baby for some reason is unable to prevent the GBS from causing a serious infection which can lead to death or severe damage to the baby. This is cultured for at 36 weeks of pregnancy, fi it is there then we give antibiotics to the mother during labor. This protects the baby. Culturing or treating any sooner is no good since ti comes and goes and is not always there. RDB
