Got my period!! Now what's next?

I had written before regarding problems I've been encountering (Message: What causes Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding? I need help!) with my period for the last months of Sept, Oct. and part of Nov. Thanks to Dr. Marchbein and Susan for your helpful responses and insights. The previous periods were long in duration, with little amount of bleeding and with brownish coloration. On Nov. 12 I got the same thing and lasted until Nov. 28 when I got a full heavy period, which I still have. This period was just like the ones I had when I was in puberty. I had a lot of cramps, and some clots and tissues were coming out. Even though I'm in pain and discomfort, I feel actually happy that apparently I got a period more normal than the ones before (even tough after entering my twenties I never had them so heavy). Could I assume that because of the lack of normal periods my body self-regulated and is shedding all the tissue that couldn't shed before in the previous months? Like I mentioned on my previous message the doctor said he'll put me in contraceptive treatment to regulate my periods until February, but he doesn't know yet I had this period. I am wondering, if my body falls back and self-regulates to normal again after this period, would it still be necessary to take the contraceptives? I never taken them before and I don't want to get my periods messed up again, or they cause I more severe hormonal imbalance than the one I apparently have. I've read some of the postings and some people have not gotten better after taking the pill to regulate their periods. I'd appreciate your insights on this. Thanks in advance!
