Hi Susan,

A Laparoscopy involves going through the belly button (or directly under it, known as an "Open Laparoscopy"...slightly larger incision, maybe 1/2 inch) along with two or three more "holes". The Dr. can view your entire pelvis as well as look further up at your gallbladder, liver, etc. Some women go back to work in a weeks time. This surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis. While you aren't fully recovered, you are usually well enough to go on with your normal activities...you might want to watch lifting, cleaning (darn...this is my most favorite activity! NOT ;o) ) and other things that could cause strain.

A Laparotomy involves a larger incision, either a "bikini" cut, or from your belly button down to the bikini area (this is how my mother's hyst was done 30 years ago). You are normally in the hospital for several days, and recovery at home is around six weeks to eight weeks. There is more pain with a Laparotomy as they have a much larger incision, whereas with the Laparoscopy, the pain is still there, but not to the degree of a laparotomy.

In terms of deciding which to do, this has a lot to do with what your physician feels is necessary. Many procedures can now be done quite safely with a laparoscopy. Women are having Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomies now. IMHO, if that can be done via laparoscopy, most anything can be! Most times Drs. will start out with a laparoscopy and then convert over to a laparotomy, depending on what is going on inside of you.

Discuss this all with your Dr. and see what he says about this. This is something that the two of you need to decide together.

I hope this has helped. If I can do anything else, please let me know (except have the surgery for you that is ;o) ).

Good luck!
