Re: Yeast Infections QuestionsFrom: SONNENSTUHL (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 31 Oct 1999 08:36:27 -0800
Thanks for your question. You are astute to identify some of the things that contribute to yeast infections. Here's a common list, that will answer your questions: 1. Cotton underwear breathes better than nylon. Lots of pants and pantyhose can keep things moist, and thus contribute. 2. Of course, taking an antibiotic can suppress the helpful bacteria and allow yeast to take over. Some women/individuals have more problems than others with this. So, if you have problems, ask your provider, when given and antibiotic, to also prescribe either the cream or the pill (Diflucan ). 3. For some individuals, the birth control pill can make yeast infections worse. I suspect it has something to do with your individual body chemistry, so is not universal. Some pills might be worse than others. 4. Evaluate your diet for sugar and hidden sugars. Some individuals are much more sensitive to sugar, and thus have more yeast infections. In addition to the regular sources, look at cereals, sodas, and even many of the 'healthy' complex carbohydrates act as sugar in your diet. If yeast infections are recurrent, I would seriously try to eliminate sugar from your diet. 5. I believe couples can spread yeast back and forth. If your partner is more susceptible, or is taking an antibiotic, then he might be a carrier, and thus give it to you. It is not generally considered 'sexually transmitted', and men rarely are carriers. But, I think again individual chemistry can set this up to happen. Again, his diet might be a factor here. 6. If you have lots of yeast infections, be sure to be checked for diabetes, as this might be a sign. Again, this has to do with sugar, and its affect in your body... 7. Acidophilus can help, as it is helping to rebalance the flora of your body. Again, look for the cause and try to work on that too... Anything else, anyone? Pat Sonnenstuhl, ARNP, CNM
