Sometimes women are prescribed Provera to bring on a missing period. Late periods can be caused by pregnancy, stress, weight loss, hormonal imbalances, and some more unusual problems.

Sometimes women experiencing very heavy bleeding are given Provera to help decrease the amount of their bleeding.

The first use -- for late periods -- is more common, but Provera is widely used for both purposes.
