AFP Testing and Spina BifidaFrom: Melissa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 20 Aug 1999 17:11:13 -0500 (CDT)
At 20 weeks and 4 days, I completed the AFP test. My results came back abnormally high. I know that this test is not accurate, but it still has me extremely worried. What are the causes of neural tube defects? I was hospitalized for asthma before I knew I was pregnant and was treated with heavy doses of Solu-Medrol. Could this have caused a NTD? Everywhere I have read says the test is to be completed before 20 weeks. Since mine was taken after, could this have affected the results? I have also read that this detects abdominal wall defects. What is this and how would it affect my baby? Does the test detect spina bifida occulta & manifesta, or just manifesta? Of babies born with spina bifida, what percentage of them are born with the manifsta type? My initial ultrasound showed nothing abnormal. Does this prove anything, good or bad? Please reply so maybe I can sleep a bit better at night.
