Bromocriptine perscribed to stop breast milk production.

My family Doctor perscribed Bromocriptine to stop my milk production and treat my breast infection after the birth of my son. Is this drug safe to use for these purposes (In that you as a doctor would perscribe it verses other medications that would accomplish the same ends)? Are there any long lasting effects from taking this drug?
