The pelvic ultrasound is to look for cysts on your ovaries which can produce pain felt in areas other than the ovaries. Also fibroid tumors can grow enough to push on other organs, nerves, etc and cause pain. Many gynecologic diseases/conditions such as Endometriosis can cause back pain.

Your doctors are being thorough by recommending that you also see a gynecologist. Expecially if they suspect that not all of your back pain is from the bulging discs.
