Boric acid to combat yeast?

I read somewhere that boric acid can help with yeast infections. Is this true? If so, do I need a prescription or can I buy it over the counter and put in in OO gelatin capsules to insert vaginally? Thank you! p.s. I have had so many yeast infections, I am resistant to Diflucan and Nizoral and find over the counter creams irritating. That is why I am looking into alternative treatments.
