Gestational Diabetes in First Pregnancy - Inevitable in 2d Pregnancy?From: TKO'sMom (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 25 Jun 1999 15:04:50 -0500 (CDT)
I am 34 years old, with an 18 month old son. I am very fit (exercise at least 4 times a week) and eat very healthy. I am 5'4" and 122 pounds. Toward the end of my 1st pregancy, I gained weight at the recommended rate, until the 36th nd 37th week, when I gained 5 pounds each week, without changing my intake. At 38 weeks, an ultrasound revealed that my baby was already close to 10 pounds, so my doctor suspected gestational diabetes. However, that suspicion was never confirmed, because the lab had lost my glucose test results, and had not informed me in time for me to retest. Born via C-section at 38 weeks, my son weighed 9 lbs. 9 oz. He had hypoglycemia, for which he was treated in NICU for one week. (1) Do these facts indicate that I, in fact, did have gestational diabetes? (2) If I did have gestational diabetes during my first pregancy, what are the odds that I will develop this condition in my second pregnancy? (3) If I have an increased risk, is there anything I can do prior to conception to decrease the risk in my second pregancy?
