Vanishing Twin ?From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 28 Jan 1999 14:09:56 -0600 (CST)
Today I attended hospital for a routine first trimester ultrasound. This is my 6th pregnancy. The scan showed 2 embryos the first one was small (crl 9.2mm - 7W1D?) and had no visible heartbeat. The second was larger (crl 15.4mm 8W0D corresponding to dates). I have had no bleeding or problems associated with this pregnancy to date. With my previous (5th) pregnancy ... an early u/s showed no heartbeat at 7w3d ... a subsequent one at 9weeks showed a heartbeat ...... so hey ... no heartbeat on u/s at 7 weeks can't be that unusual right ? As it happens at the time I posted to OBGYN net women's Health forum about the pregnancy (after the first scan) and was reassured !!! so..... my question is this ..... do ALL twin pregnancies necessarily develop at PRECISELY the same rate ? Is it possible that this smaller embryo will be okay in a couple of weeks time ? (I called my OBGYN to schedule a repeat u/s in 3 weeks.... we live in hope). Also of note ... the doctor also reckoned that these were/are identical twins (something to do with amnions/chorions and lambda signs ??? .... this will make sense to you guys ... doesn't mean much to me but I'm learning !!) So wouldn't that preclude an abnormality which is inconsistent with life ? ... in that both babies would share genetic makeup ... so they'd have to have the same abnormalities ? Or am I way off base in my understanding of things ? Thanks in Advance .... and if Dr. Ashley Hill is out there ... in cyberspace somewhere .... thanks for last time ! Regards to all at OBGYN-Net Thanks for providing this tool ! If you believe (as he does) that this is a 'vanishing twin' can somebody tell me why this happens ??
