Re: a lot of changes lately

Mary: In my opinion douching, except for specific treatment of a problem, is best not done. Douching can alter the normal vaginal acidity and alter the normal vaginal milieu.

Most of the women I saw in the office for an odor were found to have an old forgotten tampon high in the vagina. The history was 'friends tell me they can smell me across the room.' They also had a discharge that was dark brown in color. Because of this I would ask if you were examined (with a small speculum and gentle finger) to rule out vaginal foreign body?

Since you are not sexually active I would guess we can rule out most vaginal infections.

This is not to say that something would not be wrong. If you are having a change in bowel habit it should be checked out by your doctor. Blood in the stool? Easily checked in the office -- painless exam!

Back to the douching -- your body has a great mechanism for cleansing the normal vagina. (sorry your doctor and I do not agree) My advice is not to douche. Remember, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Your doctor uses one way, while I prefer another. When placed between two opposite opinions the patient ends up being the only one who does not know what to do. This bewildered patient then has to ask a lot of questions as to why one way or the other. What are the pros and cons of each method and/or get a third opinion?

My question for you would be what is the diagnosis and how was it ascertained?
