Re: ? re: ANA blood test while pregnantFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 11 Jan 1999 11:49:55 -0600 (CST)
I am not a doctor, but I have had a positive test for this in the past and have done some research as a patient. I believe this a test for Anti-Nuclear Antibodies -- that's what ANA usually means. You could do a web search of ANA or Antinuclear antibodies for more detailed information. It is basically a screening test for several different autoimmune disorders that reports a titer and pattern. I'm not sure what its significance would be in pregnancy. But I do know that positive results can occur in normal people. Depending on the titer and pattern, your doctor may need to order additional tests to clarify the results. He may review your history and other lab results to help interpret the significance of the ANA test. This is why the nurse could not tell you anything about these results. I would not panic and try to wait for your doctor to do the analysis he needs to do. I would certainly recommend you do some research on this test so that you can ask the questions you need to ask. If the ANA test is positive, find out the titer and pattern. I'm sure your doctor will give you a more complete explanation of this test and your results once he has had a chance to review the information. Good Luck!! Andrea
