If you go get a play microscope from a toy store of something (reasonably high power 900x or so). Anyway, if you have healthy/non-hostile cervical mucus, your mucus (dried) under a microscope should appear almost exactly like a fern under the micrscope. This is actually the best way to tell when you are in peak fertility, at home, absent an ovulation kit. If you go a few cycles with no ferning is may be an indication of a hostile cervix. By the way, I had my first child through home insemination and only used a speculum and microscope to know when to inseminate -- worked the first time.
