AFP Test as a Tumor Marker?

Is the AFP test also used as a tumor/cancer marker? I know a woman who says that her doctor is concerned because in both of her pregnancies, her AFP scores were high, but the babies were normal. The doctor told her that AFP is used in non-pregnant women as a tumor/cancer marker and that after she delivers, she should have the AFP test again to make sure she is OK.

I have never heard of this, and I know many women who have had high AFPs that proved to be false positives.

Please shed some light!
