Abnormal and Continuous Bleeding

I am 25 and have pretty regular periods for the past couple of years. If any of them have been irregular, I was late by usually a week. I also have a history of very painful cramping on the first day of my periods. For the past month and a half, I have experienced abnormal bleeding. I had a period a month and a half ago (it was pretty normal), then went about 7 days and had another one. It lasted 4 days and wasn't painful. Then I went another 7 days and started again. This one hasn't stopped. I have been going for 13 days now. I have not been in any pain other than very mild cramping every now and then. I visited a doctor (first time seeing this doctor) a week ago and she did a pelvic exam and said everything seemed fine (no cysts). She put me on birth control pills and said that they would stop the bleeding (which she said was stressed related). Normally, if I am stressed, I will miss periods. I have never been early or experienced anything like this. I have been on the pill for seven days now and the bleeding doesn't seem to be stoping. I know that I am not pregnant. Should I consult a different doctor to get another opinion? What sorts of tests should I request? I heard that the OBGYN should have done a blood test but she didn't. Thanks for any advice.
