Fibroids and hysterectomyFrom: Hoopie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 28 Nov 1998 15:30:06 -0600 (CST)
I am 50 yo, in menopause X 3 years, took HRT 3 years ago X10 mos., then again last 14 months. I was on cyclic therapy, but having periods every two weeks for three months. My PCP referred me to an OB/GYN who immediately did a uterine biopsy (results not back yet, but she told me it feels like fibroids). I have a 16 week uterus and she told me I need a total abdominal hyst, that Lupron probably will not work and that I would not be able to take HRT if I don't have the hyst. (my family has a high risk for heart disease, I have borderline high cholesterol) She also told me she is conservative about recommending hyst, but that in this case there is really no choice. I am not sure whether to get a second opinion. I will be seeing my OB/GYN in about a week and she wants to schedule ASAP. Should I see someone else? I am becoming concerned by all the "alternative to hyst." talk. I also have "pinching" or "pulling" pains in my abdomen for about three months, which I forgot to tell her about. They can be quite uncomfortable but are not like sharp pains. Is this related to the fibroids? My other question, which may seem a bit strange, is that it seems to me that increasing my sit-ups may help my recovery from surgery, but the pulling pains increase when I do them. Jogging also tends to make me uncomfortable. Can I hurt myself (e.g., rupture a fibroid or something?) Also, can fibroids which are this large cause fatigue? Thank you very much in advance.
