Almost two years ago, I woke up with moderate pelvic pain which increased over the period of the day. My now husband took me to the doctor when I was hurting so bad that I was doubled up in pain and could barely walk. The doctor didn't know what it was and sent me to the hospital for observation (they thought I had appendicitis). The next morning, the pain was gone and the ultrasound showed that I had ovulated. My OB/GYN later told me that I had an ovarian cyst. I've since had two others, one of which required emergency surgery (it grew to grapefruit size).

The only way to prevent cysts is to start taking birth control pills. I still got cysts on Triphasic pills and have not had any since switching to monophasic pills. Since you are trying to get pregnant, I don't know what to suggest.

You can get into trouble with large cysts. If the cyst gets twisted, the pain can be horrible and cut off blood flow to the ovary. This is an emergency. The cyst can stick around and continue to grow to a size that is a danger to the ovary (it took mine 7-9 days to get that size). Talk to your doctor about what to look for.

In one of the "Dr. B" articles on this site, he wrote a very informative article on ovarian cysts. See if you can find it.

And I could be mistaken, you could have some other problem. It just sounds exactly what I have been through. Please talk to your doctor about your problem. If you need an appt sooner, try calling and telling the receptionist that you are having severe pain with your periods and you're worried. They might be able to work you in sooner. My doctor's office works like that.

I hope you feel better and figure out what is going on.
