Re: BreastfeedingFrom: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 23 Sep 1998 21:13:09 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Monica, Am glad to hear that you have not gotten totally discouraged and are willing to try again. I am a breastfeeding mom and have a support group at my house once a month. The other suggestions are good, try and find help NOW and that way you can be prepared. the local La Leche league will have a support group which you can attend before the birth. Also see about taking a breastfeeding class at the hospital. A great book for you to get is called "The Nursing Mothers Companion" By Katherin Huggins. It is excellent. You should read it before you give birth. It covers common problems and general knowledge about breastfeeding. You should be able to find it at a Barnes and Noble, the health department or from the La Leche League. Another way to get off to a good start is to contact the local lactation consultant and MAKE SURE they visit and help you BEFORE you are discharged from the hospital. As far as your breasts go check with your Dr to see if they are inverted or not and then go from there. Breast shells can be used to bring out inverted nipples. If your nipples are not inverted they dont necessarily have to be "firm" for the baby to latch on; if they are too FULL sometimes it is difficult. It sounds to me like the problem with latchon was with the baby not you the last time. the Baby should open her mouth VERY wide and then latch on with her TONGUE rapped around the areola (the dark part) AND the nipple. If there is any clicking or smacking noises the baby is not latched on the right way. Unlatch her and try again. All these things are covered in the book by Katherine Huggins. Hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail me privatley if you want to talk more.
