Re: urethra irritation and estrogenFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Sep 1998 11:03:01 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Lisa, I had a TAH/BSO 5 years ago because of cancer. Could not be given estrogen initially because of cancer. But was given a progesterone to prevent cancer returning. I suffered with many surgical menopause symptoms for years, including profuse night sweats. Finally begged for estrogen replacement and was given .625 mg. of Premarin, every other day. Menopause symptoms persisted with only slight improvement. 10 months ago I started having pelvic pain, my bladder ached, my urethra burned, everything felt swollen, and the pain was constant varing from mild discomfort to severe pain. I was checked for infections, had a C-scan, ultrasound, etc. Doctors could find nothing wrong. Just recently I insisted on complete HRT, was willing to take the risks. I now take .625 mg. of Premarin daily, 5 mg. of Aygestin (a progesterone) daily, natural testosterone cream applied daily, and because I now have vaginal atrophy because of lack of estrogen, Premarin cream applied vaginally twice weekly. After 1 1/2 months of this HRT my pelvic pain is gone! Many of my surgical menopause symptoms have been solved now, but I still have night sweats. I did not go in seeking relief from the pain, only relief from my surgical menopause. It was a pleasant surprise that the pain has disappeared. I believe the vaginal atrophy was part of the pain, but have also read that lack of estrogen can cause bladder lining and urethra atrophy, this might explain further the pain I had and it's sudden disappearance? Good luck to you, I know what it is like living with this pain. If you had endometriosis I would also explore the possiblity that it is returning. Best wishes, Sally
