Re: Sex shortens womans life spanFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 16 Sep 1998 00:30:51 -0500 (CDT)
My 2 cents: Although Webster has a very precise definition of celibacy, many people use the word celibate to indicate that they are abstaining from "casual" sex, or sex outside of a long-term, monogamous relationship. I kind of have to admire someone choosing this form of celibacy because I am sure it is healthier in many ways -- physically, emotionally, socially. (Sorry - at 28 I am already kind of an old-fogey when it comes to casual relationships!) However, I think a person would be really cheating themselves to totally exclude the possibility of ever having an intimate relationship with a wonderful person because they think sex will shorten their lifespan! Never eating a burger and fries again will probably increase your life span more than never having sex. There are lots of everyday activities that are a whole lot riskier than sex!!! Finally, I would certainly hate this thread to give a young woman the impression that life without sex (or a man) would be lonely and miserable. Or that sex is a prerequisite for companionship. Sex in the proper context will add to the quality of a woman's life and relationships, not complicate it. But each woman must decide for herself what role sex should have in her life and relationships. For some, that may mean excluding sex entirely. Well, it looks like my 2 cents turned into a quarter!!
