Routine chlamydia test?

Do most doctors routinely check women for chlamydia during their annual exams?

I was a little confused by my doctor this morning. What I understood was that even though I had a negative test 4 years ago, that does not mean that I did not have Chlamydia at the time, and a positive test now would not necessarily mean my husband had been unfaithful during the last 4 years. She seemed to suggest that a positive test now could result from exposure before we were married.

Does that make any sense to the professionals here, or did I just misunderstand her? I always thought that once you were in a mutually monogamous relationship, you could quit worrying about STd's (assuming no infidelity).

I always thought that Chlamydia culture was like strep throat -- the bacteria is either there or not there. How accurate is the standard culture for chlamydia? Does a single culture show any organism that may be present, or do you need separate cultures for chlamydia, gonorrhea, strep, etc?

Thanks, Andrea

BTW -- The culture isn't back yet, I am just confused by what she said!
