Dear Dr. Ind,

Just backtracked and saw your post. My Hubby is a vet and we have gone through the dog baby scenario twice. We have a Chesapeke Bay retriever(110lbs), very loyal but a very protective dog. Hubby's best advice is this, every dog is different BUT if the dog has proven to bite it WILL bite again. Getting rid of the dog is not necessary if they assert their dominance as the "pack Leader" and they never leave the baby within reach of the dog. Our dog is not the leader in our house and will move instantly if our children come through. You need to remember dogs bite more people and cause more fatalities that any other domesticated animal. If they cannot assert there dominance then maybe they do need to get rid of the dog, better than a dead baby.

As a side note: in the United States, in most states, once a dog has bitten someone it is considered dangerous to the public at large and MUST be confined in a state approved kennel outside with the appropriate restaints. it is then on file that the dog is viscious and further offences result in the termination of the dog. Just shows how serious dog biting can be...
