IMHO, from personal experience-not a professional opinion. I had Demerol with my first child and it made me a little sleepy and took the edge off the contractions for about 1/2 hr but that was about it. I had an epidural from the get-go with #2-no IV narcotics that time. With #3 I had a combo Stadol/Phenergan to help me rest and get a little sleep. I vastly preferred this to the Demerol as the Phenergan component made me REALLY drowsy and allowed me to sleep between contractions and the Stadol took the edge off the contractions so I neer really woke up completely from the pain. Granted this only lasted about 45 minutes but that is better than nothing. Personally, I think the Stadol/Phenergan combo is pretty decent-especially if you find yourself laboring in the wee hours of the morning like I did and you are exhausted.
