I have taken depo-porvera twice. The first time, I was 19 years old. I bled the entire time I took it (9 months) and for a few months afterwards. The doctor told me that it was a side effect of depo-porvera. It is the reason that I discontinued the drug.

The second time I took it I was 21. I had 4 injections. My periods actually stopped within one month of the first shot. I can't explain the different reactions. I stopped the injections because of extremely decreased sex drive, which returned after I went on low-dose birth control pills.

I went to http://www.depo-provera.com tonight. In the patient information section they list heavy and irregular periods as a side effect. I am very troubled by reading your post. Unless your doctor can give you a difinitive reason to have a hysterectomy, I would not do it. Too many women have a hysterectomy because it's easier for the doctor than trying to figure out what's really wrong with you. Have you discontinued the depo-provera injections? What is the reason for the scheduled hysterectomy?
