Hi Susan, I am "just a patient" but my situation was very similar to yours. No real symptoms, no abnormal bleeding. However I was told there'd be signficant symptoms coming up (I am 41) approaching perimenopause... My GYN assured me that pone day I'd be giving a presentation somewhere and would hemmorhage... and some women corroborated that something similar did happen to them...

The only symptom I really had was starting to have some urine leakage...fibroid was on bladder.

So I just has a uterine arterial embolization. So far I am pleased. No general anesthesia, just some nice sleepy drug, and an AMAZING recovery with very little pain. Did aerobics a few days after the procedure. I did have bruising on my leg but 3 weeks later it's almost gone.

The pressure on my bladder is gone, and they expect some more shrinkage in the next few weeks. I'll have a repeat ultrasound 3 months after the procedure.

Also I was assured that if it were a sarcoma it would start growing again like mad. Plus the radiologist said that benign fibroids have a "characteristic" look in most cases on the u/s ("whorl/cinnamon roll look...")

Finally in doing research I found it is QUITE common for fibroids to start enlarging in your early 40s. Something about an "estrogen surge" pre-perimenopause. I can't remember if it was Winifred Ctuler's book... somewhere anyways. Also there are other factors that can cause the fibroids to grow. Weight gain is one -- nmore fat = more estrogen = bigger fibroids possible.
