postmenstrual anemia?From: Angela (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 22 Jul 1998 22:28:50 -0500 (CDT)
I've had what seem like fairly heavy periods for some time now, perhaps due to my fibroids. The periods only last three days, plus a couple of days of a trickle, but while they're in high gear I repeatedly go through a super tampon and sometimes a pad too in less than an hour. I have also had serious problems with fatigue most of the time for about a year. My last period finished "trickling" about a week ago. Today I tried to donate blood and was rejected because my hemoglobin (from fingerstick) was too low (11.5 on the first stick, 12.1 on the second). Only a few weeks ago I had bloodwork done via my internist, and he said all my counts were "normal." That was on cycle day 16; today was day 13. Questions: How long does postmenstrual anemia usually persist? Are these fingerstick tests accurate? Is it likely for someone with only slightly low hemoglobin to have anemic symptoms such as fatigue? Once GI bleeding has been ruled out (coincidentally I have to do a fecal occult blood test because of reflux esophagitis and some bowel symptoms), is it a good idea to take some iron, even though there is iron in my multivitamin? Thanks for any info and suggestions! Angela
