"My doctor never said anything about this."From: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 14 Jul 1998 14:44:32 -0600 (MDT)
On July 9, Pam wrote: "I am writing about having a hyst due to fibroids. I also had a mass on my left ovary. Surgery and recovery went well. I was 49 years old. My regret is that I had both ovaries removed. The reason I say this is that now one and one-half years later I have no libido. I am on hormones but have tried different strengths but nothing is helping. My Dr. never said anything about this. I'm not sure it would have helped, but in my heart I think it would have. So ask your Doctor about this. Good luck, Pam" Pam, Have you asked your doctor WHY he/she did not tell you before the surgery that ovarian removal might cause a decrease in your libido? It would seem to me that common human decency would dictate that a gynocologist inform a woman prior to the surgery that removal of her ovaries may cause a decrease in her libido. IMHO, a gynocologist who encourages a hyst patient to have a prophylactic ooph without informing her prior to the surgery that her libido may be diminished as a result is taking a tremendous liberty with another person's life. As you say, Pam, "I'm not sure it would have helped, but in my heart I think it would have." Ovarian cancer is a deadly disease, to be taken very seriously. But even a woman who is having a prophylactic ooph because she has a family history of ovarian cancer has a right to know ahead of time that the surgery may have a negative impact on her libido. Common.....human....decency. On Sun, Jan 18, Patricia Hogan wrote: "I had an oophorectomy following breast cancer treatment. Unfortunately, I have had a difficult time with testosterone depletion. I was not informed of this complication prior to this elective surgery.......I am greatly puzzled by the fact that health care providers are either ignorant about this complication of surgical menopause or don't explain it to patients."
