Vaginal ultrasound is almost always better for measuring cervical length.

If it's for measuring the cervix, the vaginal ultrasound is preferred at all stages of pregnany. For viewing the fetus, most switch to abdominal probes at *about* 13-14 weeks gestational age.

The jury is still out, but it appears that anything below 2.0 cm (and sometimes below 2.5 cm) is concerning. However, not all women with a shortened cervix will develop preterm labor, and we're not always sure what to do with the information when an ultrasound says "short cervix."
