Cheryl,

I am not a doctor but have watched a very close friend suffer from what you describe. This may or may not help you but there are dietary changes and vitamin supplements that might help lessen your symptoms. Have you tried decreasing your processed (such as hamburger helper type meals and canned foods and foods with MSG.) High sodium intake can aggrivate PMS symptoms. Chocoloate, caffiene and simple carbs--(convert to sugars) also are a no-no.

Increase your protien intake two weeks prior to your period (eggs, cottage cheese, lowfat and low sodium soft cheese)and decrease your sugars, sodium and general junk. Our practice has found if you have a high bread/bagel/pasta ingestion it can also play havoc on PMS- better carbs are complex carbs such as brown rice or beans. Dairy intake can also affect PMS. Increase your raw foods (veggies and fruits) two weeks prior to your period. Citrus especially grapefruit is a natural diuretic.

It is difficult to know what works and what doesn't work but by keeping a PMS diary and notating what you eat and what you crave might shed some light on the severity of your symptoms. Addition of 300 units of B6 have been suggested (a natural diuretic). Increase your water consumption to include 8- 8 ounce glasses per day and increase this amount if you are overweight. Add another 8 ounces for every 25 pounds you are overweight.

Seems our bodies end up craving just what we really don't need...salt and chocolate!
