Re: cervical length during pregnancyFrom: J. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 Apr 1998 15:51:52 -0500 (CDT)
Kate, Cervical measurements via ultrasound need to be done with an empty bladder to be most accurate or even better accuracy with an endovaginal probe. Excessive bladder distention gives a false elongation of the cervix as well as a false appearance of placental previa in some instances. The cervix shortens in the third trimester (effacement). The docs will be able to give more information of the stages of cervical changes but 3 cm is a pretty average length. Our ultrasound practice becomes concerned if the cervical length is less than 2.5 cm. (And off note....the person performing your ultrasound, if registered, is called a sonographer. 'Ultrasound technician' refers to someone that has not taken the registry boards. :) Janet
