cervical length during pregnancy

When I had my 20 week ultrasound, the technician measured my cervix and said it was about 3(I am assuming cm?) The doctor said my cervix looked good- long and closed. I was wondering- does the cervix gradually get shorter the closer to delivering? and I have also heard that 4cm is supposed to the normal length? Thanks for your help.
