Re: Very painful intercourseFrom: Donna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 Apr 1998 14:51:29 -0500 (CDT)
I have been diagnosed with vaginismus which is subconscious spasm of the vagina, especially at the introitus (entrance). It is sort of a viscious cycle. Uncomfortable intercourse leads to increased anxiety levels, which lead to more uncomfortable intercourse and more spasms, etc. Progresssive dilation has worked for me. There are also a few physical therapists who are offering biofeedback for this problem. Unpleasant to have someone attaching little electro-sensor things to your genitals, but if it works the results are worth the embarassment. Talk to your doctor about progressive dilation first, it involves inserting a small dialotor into your vagina for 15 minutes a day and then increasing the size of the dialator you use over a period of weeks. This procedure is also used in women who were born with abnormally short vaginas (me also), or have had to have a new vagina surgically recreated for them due to cancer. If all else fails, there is a surgical procedure called perinoplasty which is a surgical enlargement of the introitus, similar to an episiotomy.
