Hi Ashley - Yes, it is OK for you to get an exam done by your gp. It is even better than an obgyn if you have an ongoing relationship with your gp and only see an obgyn for a specialist because your gp knows you and your history well. A gp is an overall health care provider. He/she can manage your over all health, including regular vaginal exams, paps, etc. You may use your gp if your insurance requires a referral to an obgyn. If your gp detects a problem or if you are having problems that he/she is not sure of then you will probably be reffered to an obgyn. Did I just confuse you even more?

An obgyn is a specialist that specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. That person had to complete medical school and then additional training in that field.

A general practitioner specializes in overall health, like a family dr. Can treat most things, however if certain problems arise, you need to see a specialist.

Whatever you feel most comfortable with is who you should see. My gp does all my well visits for me & my kids (including vaginal exams). He also provided care during my pregnancy and birth of my last child. I am most comfortable with him because I have seen him for years and he knows me and my family so well. But the choice is yours. Go to whom you feel most comfortable - that is most important.

Hope this helps! BTW - it was NOT a silly question!
