Re: Estrogen/Weight Gain with Hysterectomy ReplyFrom: Irene (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 23 Apr 1998 00:04:08 -0500 (CDT)
I had a hysterectomy about 14 years ago when I was 42 years old. Subsequently, my sex drive became low, I began having night sweats & hot flashes, and I felt tired all the time. I began reading all I could about menopause and the two books I found most useful were Susan Lark's book and Sadja Greenwood's book. Susan Lark lists herbs and foods that help with hot flashes. I recall that yams, fennel, and Vitamin E as well as exercise and stress reducers are helpful. Things to avoid include alcohol, dairy products, caffine, fats, too much protein, very hot beverages, and really spicy foods. A few years after my hysterectomy, I became a vegetarian (actually a vegan), gave up alcohol & caffine, began exercising regularly, etc. and found I had very few hot flashes, no night sweats, and much more energy. I can't say that this would work for every woman, but it may be worth reading those books and giving it a try after discussion with your doctor. In any case, good luck to you. Irene
